What exactly is sh*t-testing?

Based on context clues from various posts, I'm getting the idea that shit-testing is when those around me would feel that my mone sig doesn't match my personality, especially if the mones are too strong for them.

Can someone clarify what shit-testing means exactly, when it would generally happen and why?
